A gentle form of bloodletting using medicinal leeches, classically regarded as the mildest raktamokshana method and suitable even for delicate patients.

What it involves
Sterile medicinal leeches are applied to the affected area to draw out a measured quantity of vitiated blood; the leech saliva also has soothing properties. Considered ideal where blood is vitiated by Pitta.
Traditionally used for
- localised Pitta-rakta skin disorders
- non-healing wounds and varicosities
- certain inflammatory swellings
- some cases of eczema and abscess
Contraindications & cautions
- anaemia and bleeding disorders
- pregnancy
- severe debility
- generalised oedema (anasarca)
