What it involves
Unlike Gandusha (a full, still mouthful), Kavala uses a smaller amount that is actively moved around the mouth and gargled before being expelled; warm sesame oil, herbal decoctions or medicated liquids may be used.
Traditionally used for
- oral hygiene
- weak or bleeding gums
- bad breath
- dry mouth and throat
- jaw and voice strength
Contraindications & cautions
- risk of swallowing (children, impaired swallowing)
- acute mouth ulcers with severe pain (choose a soothing liquid)
Questions to ask a practitioner
- Which liquid suits my oral condition?
- How long should I retain and swish?
Evidence notes
Part of daily oral care in classical routine; small studies on oil pulling suggest oral-hygiene benefit.
