Shiro Lepa / Talapothichil

A cooling herbal paste applied over the crown of the head and retained under a leaf-and-cloth wrap to calm the mind and relieve heat in the head.

What it involves

The scalp is prepared with oil, then a thick paste (often amla-based buttermilk paste) is layered over the head and covered, kept in place for 30-45 minutes; deeply cooling and sedating.

Traditionally used for

  • insomnia
  • anxiety and mental agitation
  • burning sensation of the head
  • certain headaches and scalp conditions

Contraindications & cautions

  • cold, cough or sinus congestion
  • aversion to cold on the head
  • open scalp lesions
