Ayurvedic constitution
Kapha
Earth and water — the one that holds everything together.
The Mountain
Kapha is structure and cohesion: tissue, lubrication, immunity, patience. A Kapha constitution is strong, steady and genuinely calming to be near, and it stays well through stimulation — movement, lightness, novelty, and an early alarm.
- Element
- earth
- Element
- water
- Creature
- The elephant — the classical gaja-gamana, a gait named for unhurried strength
- Season
- Vasanta — spring, when the winter's accumulation melts and moves
- Hours
- 6–10, morning and evening
- Tastes
- Pungent, bitter and astringent — the light, drying three
Why that name
Kapha is Soma — the moon, the nectar, the cool held substance — in the classical triad of moon, sun and wind. It is the only dosha whose job description is to stay put.
What this constitution does well
- Endurance most people cannot match and do not understand
- A steady temperament; you are the one others calm down next to
- Deep memory and deep loyalty — you keep what you take in
- Strong immunity and sound sleep when the rest of your life is in order
What to watch for
- Heaviness — of body, of digestion, of mood, of morning
- Congestion and mucus, especially in spring
- Comfort as a strategy: staying is easier for you than starting
- Sweet, heavy, cold food, which is exactly the food you will want
Its classical faces
Figures from the texts and the epics, not living people — the tradition types characters, not celebrities.
Soma
Vedic
The moon and the nectar: cool, nourishing, retained. The classical correlate of Kapha.
Prithvi
Vedic
Earth — the element that gives things a shape and then keeps them in it.
Kaubera sattva
Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 4
A sattvic mind-type: dignified, patient, comfortable with plenty, slow to be provoked. Kapha psychology, catalogued.
Things worth knowing
- Bodhaka kapha, in the tongue, is what makes taste possible at all. Charaka's proof: put a dry substance on a dry tongue and you taste nothing. Moisture is the medium of flavour.
- Tarpaka kapha is placed in the head and nourishes the sense organs — the classical basis for nasya, oil in the nose, and for the maxim that the nose is the doorway to the head.
- Kapha is the seat of bala, strength, and the physical ground of ojas — the tradition's word for the refined essence that immunity and vitality rest on.
- Pippali, long pepper, has its own escalating-dose regimen called vardhamana pippali: one pippali a day, climbing, then descending. It is one of the oldest dose-titration protocols in medicine.
- Kapha's purification is vamana, therapeutic emesis, and the texts schedule it for spring — the season Kapha liquefies and moves on its own.
Signature herb
Constitution is a lens for self-understanding, not a diagnosis. Nothing here treats, cures or replaces care from a qualified practitioner.
