Ayurvedic constitution
Kapha–Pitta
Clay fired hard — patience with real heat inside it.
The Kiln
Endurance leads, ambition warms it: steady, determined, and much harder to move than to persuade. This type accumulates before it inflames, so its early warnings are heaviness and comfort-seeking rather than anything dramatic.
- Element
- earth
- Element
- water
- Element
- fire
- Creature
- The elephant with the tiger's eye
- Season
- Vasanta and Grishma — spring's heaviness, then summer's heat
- Hours
- 6–10 and 10–2
- Tastes
- Bitter, pungent and astringent — the lightening three
Why that name
Earth becomes a pot only after fire. Kapha gives the shape and the substance; Pitta gives it the hardness. Both are needed, and the firing is the part that takes patience.
What this constitution does well
- Excellent stamina with genuine ambition behind it
- Quiet determination — you do not announce things, you complete them
- Warm, steady temperament that tolerates a great deal before it complains
- Strong constitution: illness tends to be infrequent and recoverable
What to watch for
- Accumulation — of weight, of congestion, and of unspoken resentment
- Oversleeping and heavy meals, which feel like rest and act like sedation
- Comfort becoming avoidance; you will tolerate a bad situation for years
- Heat rising quietly underneath — check inflammation markers rather than waiting for symptoms
Its classical faces
Figures from the texts and the epics, not living people — the tradition types characters, not celebrities.
Soma warmed by Surya
Vedic
The moon's substance under the sun — cool matter with heat working inside it.
Kaubera sattva
Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 4
Dignified, patient, at ease with abundance — with more fire under it than the description suggests.
Things worth knowing
- Classical Ayurveda treats accumulation as a six-stage process, and the first two stages have no symptoms at all. This is the type the staged model was practically written for.
- Turmeric is prescribed in the texts as much for the skin and the blood as for the gut — a Pitta medicine in a Kapha vehicle, which is exactly this constitution's shape.
- Kapha's season is spring, Pitta's is autumn. This type gets two annual reset points rather than one, which is a real advantage if you use them.
- Ayurveda considers a strong constitution a responsibility rather than a licence: the texts say the robust body hides its errors longest and therefore accumulates them furthest.
Signature herb
Constitution is a lens for self-understanding, not a diagnosis. Nothing here treats, cures or replaces care from a qualified practitioner.
