Ayurvedic constitution

Pitta–Vata

Fire fletched with air — aim first, speed second.

The Comet

Fire leads and air carries it: precision, drive and follow-through, moving faster than the people around you expected. Pitta–Vata gets an enormous amount done and pays for it in heat and dryness — acidity, short sleep, a nervous system that will not power down.

Why that name

Bright, exact, and visible from a long way off — but on a path that is all momentum, with nothing to slow it but the schedule you impose yourself.

What this constitution does well

  • You finish. The idea and the delivery are the same person
  • Exceptional under pressure and time limits
  • Clear-eyed judgement that does not soften to be liked
  • Physical and mental stamina in sprints

What to watch for

  • Burnout that looks like a great quarter right up until it doesn't
  • Acidity, reflux and inflammatory skin when meals slide
  • Restless sleep — a hot mind on a dry nervous system
  • Impatience with people who are simply slower, which is most people

Its classical faces

Figures from the texts and the epics, not living people — the tradition types characters, not celebrities.

Surya driven by Anila

Vedic

The sun's heat carried by wind — the classical elements of this pair, in the order that matters.

Sarpa sattva

Charaka Samhita, Sharirasthana 4

Valorous when provoked, sharp, intense in effort — with Vata's restlessness underneath it.

Things worth knowing

  • Classical texts describe agni — digestive fire — in four states, and Pitta types most often have tikshna agni, the sharp one: it digests brilliantly and then digests you.
  • Pitta's chief cleansing is virechana, purgation, and Vata's is basti, enema. A Pitta–Vata regimen has to sequence them, which is why the tradition insists on a practitioner rather than a protocol.
  • The classical daily clock puts Pitta at 10–2 and Vata at 2–6, twice a day. If your energy has a very reliable shape, that is the reason.
  • Amalaki is one of the few sour substances Ayurveda calls cooling. Almost everything sour heats; this one is the standing exception.
