Ayurvedic constitution
Kapha–Vata
A deep channel with a fast current.
The River
Stability leads and movement runs through it: endurance with a creative edge, and a temperament people rely on. Cold and irregularity unsettle you from two directions at once, so warmth and rhythm do more for this type than intensity ever will.

Why that name
The Ganga descending is held in Shiva's hair before it touches the earth — force made survivable by something steady enough to receive it. Kapha gives this type the banks; Vata gives it the current.
What this constitution does well
- Stamina that outlasts more obviously energetic people
- Calm in a crisis, with enough quickness to act inside it
- You finish long projects — rare, and worth knowing about yourself
- Warm, steady presence that others organise themselves around
What to watch for
- Cold and damp, which aggravate both of your doshas
- Congestion, heaviness and slow digestion, with dryness underneath
- Inertia that Vata then turns into worry about the inertia
- Irregular schedules — you need rhythm more than you need effort
Its classical faces
Figures from the texts and the epics, not living people — the tradition types characters, not celebrities.
Soma moved by Anila
Vedic
The moon's substance with wind through it — depth that still travels.
Nandi
Shaiva imagery
The bull at the threshold: immovable, attentive, and faster than he looks.
Things worth knowing
- Ayurveda considers Kapha the dosha of childhood, Pitta of adulthood and Vata of old age. Every constitution therefore drifts Vata-ward over a lifetime — worth knowing if Kapha leads yours now.
- Trikatu means the three pungents: ginger, black pepper and long pepper. It is the classical prescription for exactly this problem — a strong body with a slow fire.
- Kapha accumulates in late winter and only releases in spring, which is why the tradition schedules spring cleansing rather than New Year cleansing.
- The classical prescription for Kapha is the one nobody wants: rise before sunrise, move vigorously, and eat less than you would like. It is also the one that works fastest.
Signature herb
Constitution is a lens for self-understanding, not a diagnosis. Nothing here treats, cures or replaces care from a qualified practitioner.
