Ayurvedic constitution
Pitta–Kapha
Flame on oil — the strongest engine the tradition describes.
The Lamp
Fire on a foundation that can feed it: strong digestion, strong build, sustained drive. This is the most physically robust of the dual constitutions and the one that fails slowly rather than suddenly — inflammation and accumulation, both arriving quietly.

- Bitter and astringent — cooling and lightening together
Why that name
A ghee lamp is exactly this pair: Kapha is the oil, Pitta is the flame. Neither burns alone — and the flame is only as steady as the oil is clean.
What this constitution does well
- Real physical robustness — strong digestion and strong recovery
- Sustained drive rather than bursts; you can hold a decade-long project
- Natural authority; people assume you are in charge and you usually are
- Sleep and appetite that stay reliable under pressure
What to watch for
- Inflammation with weight gain — the two shadows arriving together
- Rich food, which you digest well enough to keep eating past the point of sense
- Intensity hardening into stubbornness, and stubbornness into possessiveness
- Slow-building conditions rather than sudden ones — check in before symptoms insist
Its classical faces
Figures from the texts and the epics, not living people — the tradition types characters, not celebrities.
Surya over Soma
Vedic
Sun on water: the elemental picture of heat held by substance.
The ghee lamp
Ritual and classical imagery
The oldest household image of fire and fuel in balance — and the reason a lamp is the standard metaphor for a well-tended life.
Things worth knowing
- Classical texts describe four states of digestive fire — sharp, irregular, slow and balanced. Pitta–Kapha is the one type that can hold the balanced state, sama agni, for years at a stretch.
- Guduchi is called amrita, nectar, and grows as a vine that survives being cut from its root — the tradition's example of a plant that carries its own vitality.
- Pitta and Kapha share one quality: liquidity. It is why this type's problems arrive as accumulation and swelling rather than as dryness.
- The heaviest constitutions are prescribed the lightest regimens. Ayurveda's rule is likes increase likes — the treatment for strength is not more strength.
Signature herb
Constitution is a lens for self-understanding, not a diagnosis. Nothing here treats, cures or replaces care from a qualified practitioner.
